Lately, my primary focus have been on an event I am putting together showcasing Caribbean ritual arts. My research has taken me onto a path I did not plan to walk but, as I gain information, it is evolving me. Rituals bring healing to one's life.
My interest in the arts is natural. However, it is only over the last 7-10 years that I've taken the time to develop this interest beyond more than a just a frill around my brain. While staying home to raise my children, (a choice) instead of institutional professional advancement of self, I took on the livelihood of not only my biological children but other children with whom I came in contact Every announcement from each child became its own story of importance.
I hurried up and created a bi-monthly weekend excursion to the city, taking them to museums etc. While on this venture, I had another revelation. Most of the children I was fostering are first and second generation Americans of Caribbean heritage, and they knew zip about Caribbean culture and history. Hence I was stirred awake again to embark on another endeavor by introducing the rich diversity of islands filled with rituals, rhythms of music, instruments, dance, flavors, colors .. a vast offering to solidify pride, significance and a sense of belonging, in young lives.
From then to now... a learning process that continues to grow.
